Hummingbird feeders FAQs
Q: What color should I choose for my hummingbird feeder?
A: Red is the best color for hummingbird feeders. Red attracts the hummingbird
more than any other color. The feeder does not need to be colored entirely
red, it just needs some red in it to attract the hummingbird. Do not,
however, use food coloring to color the nectar red. It is unnecessary,
and there is a chance (not yet proven) that the dye can harm the birds.
Q: Do hummingbirds suck the nectar?
A: No, actually hummingbirds insert their beaks and lick the nectar
with very fast licking motions with their tongues.
Q: What important features should I look for in a hummingbird
feeder?
A: Choose a feeder that you like to look at even when no hummingbird
is in view. Ease of cleaning, colorful elements, ant moats, rain guards
and perches are all useful available options.
Q: What solution should I use to fill my feeder?
A: Four parts warm tap water to one part sugar (stirred) – it
is not necessary to use any special “nectar” mixes with
extra vitamins and minerals. The flower nectar that hummingbirds normally
take is pretty much just sugar and water. Again, do not use dye –
it is unnecessary and potentially harmful. The solution can go bad –
turning cloudy or growing black mold. Change it if this happens. You
may need new solution every 2-3 days. (Boiling your sugar water solution
can help – just allow it to cool before you place it outside).
